Our farm share hasn’t been as large as last year’s, due to a long cool spring. Fortunately it’s started to heat up around here, and I’ll bet we see much larger yields in the weeks to come. In the face of rising food costs and growing hunger around the world, I know how lucky we are to have this abundance.
I’ve added a link to FreeRice.com in my sidebar. It’s been around since Oct. 2007, but I just happened to find it this week. FreeRice is a word game which has two goals: “to provide English vocabulary to everyone for free, and to help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. All money raised by the site goes to the UN World Food Program to help feed the hungry.” The game is actually really fun, and fairly addictive.
A couple of interesting articles: the first from the New York Times: “Shoppers Buy Slices of Farms” which talks about Community Supported Agriculture, or farm shares. The second is an article in the Guardian which exposes that “Biofuels have forced global food prices up by 75% — far more than previously estimated — according to a confidential World Bank report.”
